The
gallbladder holds the digestive fluid, called chyme, that’s released into your small intestine.
Gallstones are hardened deposits of bile. Gallstones can range in size from as small as a grain
of sand to as large as a golf ball. There are two types of gallstones, cholesterol dn calcium
bilirubinate. Cholesterol gallstones make up the majority of gallstones. People who experience
symptoms from their gallstones usually require gallbladder removal surgery. If the gallstones
don’t cause any signs or symptoms, then they typically don’t need treatment and can be
observed.

Five Factors of Gallstones

Factors that may increase your risk of gallstones include the 5 F’s: fat, female, forty, fair, and
fertile. Fat is a generalization of people who may have a high-cholesterol diet or people that may have diabetes. Female is based on that women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones. Forty is based on the fact that risk increases with age, so people who are at least
forty are more likely to have it. Fair is based on the fact that white populations are more often
affected by gallbladder disease. And fertile is based on the fact that women who are or who
have been pregnant are more likely to have been affected by high estrogen.

Signs and Symptoms

Gallstones may be asymptomatic, without any signs or symptoms. If a gallstone lodges in a duct and causes a blockage, the resulting signs and symptoms can possibly include:
● Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the upper right patio of your abdomen
● Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the center of your abdomen, just below the
breast bone
● Back pain between your shoulder blades
● Pain in your right shoulder
● Nausea or vomiting
Gallstone pain may last several minutes to a few hours.

Read more about this article here!

This article has been written by Umedoc staff and fully reviewed and liked by Jim Liu, MD.

#medical #telehealth #umedoc

What are symptoms of gallstones?
