Certain triggers can cause an asthma attack where the airways become tight, inflamed, and produce mucus. Each person may have different asthma triggers. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and infrequently to frequently depending on the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Difficulty breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wheezing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Coughing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chest pain or tightness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Signs that asthma is worsening include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;More frequent and severe symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Waking up at night with symptoms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased medication or inhaler use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decrease physical activity tolerance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to seek immediate medical help<\/strong>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">A severe asthma attack requires immediate medical attention. A rescue inhaler should be used immediately. It contains fast-acting medicine that can relax the airways and provide a quick relief. Signs to visit the emergency department include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Anxiety or panic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chest pain or tightness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bluish or gray fingernails or lips<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pale, sweaty face<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Very quick breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe coughing or wheezing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:27px\"><strong>Categorizing the severity of asthma<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">There are four categories of severity. The type of treatment received corresponds to the severity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Mild is symptoms less than 2 days in a week and less than 2 nights in a month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mild persistent is symptoms more than 2 days in a week and 3-4 nights in a month<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moderate persistent is symptoms daily and more than one night a week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe persistent is symptoms throughout the day and frequently at night<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Prevention such as using long-term medications and avoiding triggers can prevent asthma attacks. Long-term medications include inhaled corticosteroids, leukotriene modifiers, combination inhalers and theophylline. In the event of an asthma attack, quick relief or rescue medications are used.
