Three things everyone should know if they have Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder(ADHD)
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a condition which can make it hard
for people to concentrate, perform daily tasks, sit still for long periods of time, and control
impulsive behavior. If you or someone you know has ADHD below are important facts to keep in mind when trying to understand the condition.
1) Some people may be diagnosed with ADHD while they are still a child, but others cases
may not be recognized until adulthood. Here we will discuss symptoms associated with
ADHD in adults, but symptoms may be similar in children as well. The Mayo Clinic states some adults may have fewer symptoms as they get older but others will still have challenges with activities of daily living. The following are examples of adult ADHD symptoms according to the Mayo Clinic:
○ Difficulty focusing, completing, and prioritizing tasks
○ Poor time management, planning, or multitasking
○ Impulsive tendencies
○ Issues with organization
○ Feeling restless
○ Mood swings or temper flare ups
2) Treatment options include lifestyle changes, counseling/therapy, and medications. Per
the CDC lifestyle changes that may help regulate someone with ADHD include creating a routine, managing distractions, planning ahead, making goals, as well as a healthy
lifestyle with sufficient sleep and exercise. Therapy choices include behavior therapy,
support groups, and parental intervention/training. There are two common classes of medication used to treat ADHD: stimulants and non-stimulants. Talk to a health care professional to determine which treatment method is best for you.
3) Many people who have ADHD also have a coexisting psychological or developmental
disorder. For instance, some with ADHD may also have anxiety or depression. It’s important to follow up with a health care provider if you or someone you know has uncontrolled ADHD to ensure proper treatment and care as you may have an undiagnosed comorbid condition.
