Positive coping mechanisms to help with stress

Coping strategies to help manage with stress and anxiety can help keep a positive, happy, and healthy mind, as well as emotional equilibrium. Coping involves adjusting to unusual demands and stressors and requires a greater effort and using greater energy.

Some common coping mechanisms may challenge one to lower their expectations, ask for help from others, take responsibility, engage in problem solving, maintain supportive relationships, maintain emotional composure, challenge previous beliefs, and distance yourself from the source of stress. Coping is a gradual process rather than a single event, and therefore may require several different coping strategies in order to deal with a stressful event.

Individuals differ in their coping styles and require flexibility in coping to fit the demands of different situations.

In order to properly cope with stress, it is important to evaluate your overall lifestyle. Some stress-reducing activities to help cope with stressors include getting enough quality sleep, eating a well-balanced diet, exercising on a regular basis, taking enough personal time to rest and relax, practicing relaxation exercises, meditation, engaging in pleasurable activities, avoiding caffeine/alcohol use, and taking time away from stressors in order to reflect.

It is important for individuals to take time to help cope with stress and to push through using different strategies or a combination of strategies.
