The Goal: generally, a healthy reading is less than 120/80. If you are consistently seeing numbers higher than 130/80, that is the danger zone where damage begins.
How to Drop the Pressure
You don’t always need medication to fix it. Small lifestyle shifts have a massive impact:
- Shake the Salt Habit: Sodium is a magnet for water. When you eat too much salt, your body holds onto fluid, which increases blood volume and pressure. The biggest culprit isn’t the salt shaker; it’s processed food, bread, and restaurant meals.
- Move Your Body: Your heart is a muscle. If you exercise it (even just brisk walking!), it gets stronger and can pump blood with less effort. Less effort means less pressure on your arteries.
- Tame the Stress: When you are stressed, your body releases hormones that temporarily spike your pressure. Chronic stress keeps it high. Finding 10 minutes a day to breathe deeply or meditate is literally heart-protective.
